On completion of this Apprenticeship, an Accounts/Finance assistant will have the opportunity to progress within the industry in a range of roles such as Accounts Assistant, Accounts Payable Clerk, Accounts Administrator, Assistant Bookkeeper and Data input Clerk.

Course Summary: 

An Accounts or Finance Assistant plays a key role in supporting the efficient and accurate finance function within a business. They assist the accounting team with various junior accounting tasks, which can vary significantly depending on the team structure and size of the business.

An Accounts or Finance Assistant’s work could include:

  • Basic bookkeeping activities
  • Working with sales and purchase ledgers
  • Running calculations to ensure that records and payments are correct
  • Recording of cash and data entry

Accounts or Finance Assistant can work in almost any sector. Potential employers include corporate businesses, sole traders, partnerships, Public sector, not-for-profit organisations and educational institutions. Accounts or finance assistant may work in-house for an organisation or they might work for an accountancy firm, bookkeeping practice, Shared Service provider, self-employed or on behalf of several different clients.

As well as ensuring full competency as an Assistant Accountant, this standard provides the foundation for progression into several career paths in the Accounting sector including Audit Trainee, Corporate Recovery Analyst, Credit Controller or Tax Accountant.

Course Summary:

An Assistant Accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work predominately either as an assistant accountant within practice or alternatively within the finance function of an organisation. Part of their role will involve assisting in the day to day financial activities such as data entry to month end management accounts and/or year-end financial statements. In addition, the Assistant Accountant may find themselves involved in regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns or assisting in the preparation of tax computations.

An Assistant Accountant will be responsible for managing their own caseload and time whilst reporting to a more senior accountant.

They assist in overseeing every stage of the production process, from the initial phase, selecting seeds for crops or breeding livestock, through to the production phase and ultimately to the sale or direct supply to consumers. They are responsible for ensuring the health and welfare of humans, plants, and animals, while also addressing environmental considerations.

The primary focus of an Assistant Farm Manager is on the daily operations of the farm, working to achieve business objectives related to productivity, environmental sustainability, and industry standards, as well as meeting key performance indicators (KPIs). They will likely deal directly with agronomists, vets, nutritionist, machinery engineers and sales personnel.

On completion of this Standard the Auto-care Technician will be eligible to apply for IMI membership as a Registered Young Professional or if they wish as an Associate Member. They would also gain entry into the IMI Professional Register.

Course Summary:

An Auto-care Technician performs various services and repairs on cars, car-derived vans and light goods vehicles, typically within an Auto-care or “Fast-Fit” Centre. The role demands a distinctive blend of technical expertise, retail proficiency and customer service skills. Auto-care Technicians utilise a variety of tools, measurement instruments and diagnostic equipment to detect and fix minor system malfunctions.

The Auto-care Technician has to demonstrate expertise not only in the technical elements of their role but a good grasp of the practical and theoretical aspects of the vehicle systems they service. They also need to have excellent telephone, customer handling and effective sales skills, as well as strong problem solving and self-organisation skills. They must be able to work as part of a team but also operate independently, understand how their centre operates from a commercial perspective and how their actions contribute to business results, whilst maintaining a high standard of workmanship.

On completion of this Apprenticeship, apprentices will have satisfied the requirements to obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card at the appropriate level. Progression onto the Craft Bricklayer level 3 Apprenticeship.

Course Summary:

Bricklaying is a fundamental role within the construction industry, especially in residential building. This occupation is prevalent in both new construction and renovation sectors, often requiring outdoor work in various weather conditions and at height. Projects can vary greatly in size, scope, and duration, ranging from repairing garden walls to constructing new homes and large commercial developments. These may include office buildings, hospitals, and retail spaces.

Within this role you will be tasked with delivering a high-quality product that meets established standards, specifications, and design plans. Carry out responsibilities with a strong focus on safety, prioritising the health, safety, and well-being of themselves and others on the construction site at all times. With a focus on sustainable construction, they should also be mindful of environmental impact, material sustainability, waste reduction, and recycling practices.

Course Summary:

The main goal of this occupation is to work with wood-based materials and related products to create and install building components. This typically involves shaping and cutting materials, installing final elements such as partitions, doors, staircases, window frames, mouldings, and timber flooring, as well as assembling structural parts like floor joists and roofs. All tasks must be carried out safely, using the proper tools, and adhering to required quality standards.

This occupation includes two different options. People will either work on a construction site as a Site Carpenter or in a workshop as an Architectural (Bench) Joiner.

Site Carpenter

Will prepare and install basic building components e.g. doors, straight staircases, wall and floor units and erecting structural carpentry and roof structures on a building site or in domestic and commercial premises.

Architectural Joiner

Will create building components by setting out, marking out and manufacturing basic architectural products, including doors, windows, straight staircases and associated ironmongery.

Course Summary:

Civil Engineers provide technical and management input to develop design solutions for complex civil engineering problems. They will work as part of a team of engineers and other construction professionals through all lifecycle stages of development, design, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of civil engineering infrastructure. This includes the planning, design, construction, management, maintenance or dismantling of:

  • The built environment: for example, buildings, structures, parks and public spaces, schools, offices, museums, hospitals,
  • Infrastructure: for example, transportation (road, rail, bridges, tunnels, ports and airports),
  • Water and waste management, marine and coastal engineering: for example, irrigation systems, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), flood, river and coastal defences,
  • Energy supplies: for example, utilities, hydropower, power stations, nuclear plants, on and offshore wind farms.

They might work in public and private sector organisations including local authorities, central government departments and agencies, engineering consultancy practices, contracting firms and research and development organisations.

Civil Engineering Technicians help prepare and produce plans, designs, and documentation in line with relevant codes of practice and industry standards, such as Construction Design and Management (CDM) and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB). They ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, as well as health, safety, and wellbeing guidelines.

They will apply engineering principles and techniques, perform calculations and data analysis, and create sketches, diagrams, and models to assist with technical problem-solving and the development of civil engineering designs and solutions. They utilise various tools and methods, including digital technologies like CAD or BIM, to support the visualisation, communication, measurement, and evaluation of civil engineering projects.

On successful completion of the Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Practitioner apprenticeship, individuals may progress to further higher education, including degree-level study. They may also choose to specialise in areas such as carbon reduction and Net Zero, waste management and the circular economy, or supply chain sustainability and human rights. Additional career pathways include roles such as Compliance and Risk Officer, Sustainability Manager, or ESG Analyst.

On completion of this apprenticeship, a Countryside worker will have the opportunity to progress within the industry into roles such as Estate Worker, Access/Maintenance Ranger, Site Warden, Field Operative and Volunteer Leader.

On completion of this apprenticeship individuals will be eligible to apply for Entry-level Environmentalist (ELEnv) using this link 

Course Summary: 

Countryside workers perform specialised environmental and conservation tasks, while also understanding the relationship between practical conservation efforts and the productive and recreational uses of the countryside. This includes the management of farming activities (such as livestock and crop production), as well as sporting activities like fishing and shooting, and how these aspects align with countryside management practices.

Countryside workers will be capable and eager to take on challenging outdoor tasks in diverse and potentially remote locations, such as moorland, heathland, woodland, and coastal areas. They will engage with the public, explain their work, and carry out their duties year-round in various weather conditions, both independently and as part of a team.

Day to day work could include:

  • Building and repairing a variety of field boundaries including fences, walls and hedging
  • Maintaining public rights of way for walkers, cyclists and horse riders
  • Improving habitats and woodland using a variety of appropriate techniques including pruning, felling or planting
  • Surveying/monitoring habitats and flora and fauna to understand species numbers and relate this to relevant habitat management practices

Course Summary: 

As a Craft Bricklayer, the role involves setting out and laying bricks, brick specials, blocks, and other materials to build and repair intricate walls and structures. Craft Bricklayers are responsible for planning and organising the work on site for the team, as well as verifying the quality of the completed work. Typically working outdoors on construction sites in various weather conditions and at height, they ensure that the masonry work is completed to specification, on schedule, and in a safe and sustainable manner.

Interacting with the immediate team and site management on all masonry aspects of the construction programme as well as other construction trades.

Course Summary:

Craft Carpenters work with wood and related materials to design, construct, and install detailed building components. This typically includes tasks such as cutting, shaping, and assembling materials, along with fitting finished pieces like decorative or intricate elements. All work must be carried out safely, using the appropriate tools and adhering to established quality standards.

Site Carpenters operate on construction sites for both residential and commercial projects, where they prepare and install complex, custom-built structural components. Their work includes constructing and assembling intricate and non-standard roof structures. This role requires coordination and communication with a range of professionals, including bricklayers, plasterers, plumbers, site supervisors, project managers, architects, designers, contractors, and clients.

Course Summary:

As a Crop Technician, you will be responsible for maximising crop and plant yields through establishment, management, harvesting, and post-harvest operations, while also preserving and enhancing the surrounding environment. Staying current with technological advancements and new innovations will be essential. The role requires self-motivation, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team to complete tasks safely and efficiently. With many companies adopting automation for routine tasks, technical skills will be necessary to operate this equipment.

A Crop Technician will specialise in either “Soil-based systems” or “Container-based systems.” Soil-based systems are typically used to grow a diverse range of crops in fields, while container-based systems are primarily used in horticulture for growing plants and trees, though they can also be applied to fruit production.

Dental nurses provide chairside support to dental professionals while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and infection prevention. Their duties include preparing instruments, materials, and medicaments for dental procedures; mixing materials; sterilising equipment; maintaining accurate records; noting dictation; managing stock levels; and ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout each visit. Completing this apprenticeship will provide an individual with essential practical skills needed for the role and develop professional behaviours aligned with industry expectations.

Dental nurses are registered professionals and work within the standards and scope of practice as defined by the General Dental Council (GDC) Scope of Practice document. To maintain this professional registration qualified Dental Nurses are required to complete mandatory CPD this includes at least 50 hours over 5 years.

Course Summary:

The role is to produce detailed solutions to achieve the optimum performance of built environment projects via digital models and presentations using software, sketches and electronic visualisations. The apprentices will typically support Digital Engineers or other functional specialists in completing complex tasks using digital engineering techniques,  specifically:

  • Virtualisation and simulation of design, construction and management of assets
  • Digital measurement of design, production and management of assets
  • Communication of complex engineering principles to stakeholders digitally
  • Integration of construction data and information throughout the whole life cycle of the asset

They may either be working on their own or supervising others to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements set by Government for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old.

An Early Years Educator:

  • Plans and supervises child initiated and adult led activities which are based around the needs and interests of each individual child
  • Supports children to develop numeracy and language skills through games and play
  • Has key person responsibility to help ensure each child feels safe and secure
  • Meets the care needs of the individual child such as feeding, changing nappies and administration of medicine

Course Summary:

An Early Years Practitioner will be responsible for supporting child initiated and adult led activities based around the needs and interests of each individual child. They will be supporting children’s learning through planned, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes and working as part of a team to ensure each child feels safe and secure.

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with parents, children, colleagues and wider multi agency professionals and partners such as health visitors, social workers and speech and language therapists.

An Early Years Practitioner will also support the observation and assessment of each child and contribute to their learning experiences.  Assisting with the care needs of the individual child such as teeth, skin, hair, feeding, changing nappies and toileting under direction of a more senior member of the team. They will also work in partnerships with other colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals, with support from a more senior member of the team, to meet the individual needs of each child. They will also have a responsibility for ensuring that they recognise when a child is in danger and/or at risk of serious harm or abuse and contributing to the health and safety of the children, staff and others on the premises.

Professional registration is subject to candidates successfully completing this apprenticeship and undergoing professional review.

Course Summary:

This role involves working on and developing live projects, designing and contributing own ideas and concepts as well as working closely within a team to solve construction issues using the latest technology and methodology. As well as making design decisions and producing Computer Aided Design (CAD) models an employee will be expected to communicate this information to internal and external parties.

This apprenticeship will specialise in one of the following disciplines:

On completion of this apprenticeship, an Engineering Operative will have the opportunity to progress within the industry in a range of roles depending on their chosen pathway or progress onto a higher level apprenticeship.

Course Summary:

Engineering Operatives will have clear reporting lines with anything outside their role and responsibility. They will work individually or as part of a team to carry out a range of engineering operations which could include

  • Ensuring machines and equipment used are maintained and serviceable
  • Dealing with breakdowns
  • Restoring components and systems to serviceable condition by  repair and replacement
  • Operating a variety of machines (CNC or Conventional)
  • Assembling and repairing machine and press tools, dies, jigs, fixtures and other tools
  • Fabrication/installation of a wide variety of other sheet fabrications and equipment
  • Fabrication and assembly of metal parts joining techniques
  • Preparing materials and equipment for engineering processes
  • Providing technical support including communications software, test tools, performance, capacity planning, and e-commerce technology as required

An Engineering Operative will meet the core requirements set out within the apprenticeship and be able to demonstrate the specialist requirements in ONE job-specific role. These could be:

  • Engineering Operatives working within a maintenance role . This role can cover either mechanical, electrical, electronic or fluid power work or a combination of them
  • Engineering operatives working within a mechanical manufacturing engineering role
  • Engineering operatives working within an electrical and electronic engineering role
  • Engineering operatives working within a fabrication role
  • Engineering operatives working within a materials, processing or finishing role
  • Engineering operatives working within a technical support role

Course Summary:

Gas engineering involves the safe installation, commission, decommission and the ongoing service and repair of gas appliances in either a domestic or non-domestic setting.

Appliances can include, but are not limited to, a range of work categories such as

  • Central heating boilers
  • Unvented hot water storage
  • Ducted air heaters
  • Cookers
  • Space heaters
  • Meters,
  • Alternative fuel
  • Boosters
  • Testing and purging for industrial pipework.

Roles in gas engineering will include explaining how installations and appliances work, providing energy efficiency advice and ensuring customer service excellence at all times. Gas engineering operates strictly within the requirements of health and safety legislation.

Roles in gas engineering are physical in nature, and may involve lifting and moving of equipment, working at heights and working in confined spaces. All gas engineers must be registered on the Gas Safe® Register for each appliance in which they are competent to undertake work on.

Progression:

This standard is recognised by the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), the Professional Body for Greenkeepers. Upon completion of this standard the individual will be eligible to join BIGGA as a full member and become a BIGGA Accredited Greenkeeper.

Job opportunities will also be enhanced for those individuals who have completed the programme with promotion to more senior positions within a golf club facility or the option to progress by working in other sports facilities such as a Grounds Maintenance Operator/Technician.

Course Summary:

A Golf Greenkeeper is responsible for the maintenance, care and overall appearance of a golf course in line with employer’s requirements. It is their job to maintain a good quality playing surface and ensure the course offers a consistent challenge and an enjoyable experience for golfers.

There are four key turf grass areas on a golf course:

  • Greens
  • Tees
  • Fairways
  • Areas of rough

Each of which requires a different type of maintenance. Using a range of equipment and machinery safely and competently will play a major part within an apprentices training programme. Golf Greenkeepers will also be involved in hazard, environmental and ecological operations which may include bunker maintenance, planting turf, trees, shrubs and developing wildlife habitats. The skills required to become a competent Greenkeeper will be acquired whilst working on the golf course.

By the end of the programme, the individual will know when, how and why the range of maintenance operations are carried out.

Course Summary:

A Heavy Vehicle (HV) technician is responsible for servicing, inspecting, and repairing HVs classified by the Department of Transport as category N2 or N3, along with associated trailers and ancillary equipment. They work on all vehicle systems, with tasks ranging from replacing simple parts to diagnosing and fixing complex faults using diagnostic methods and equipment. The technician’s daily tasks are constantly evolving.

Today’s technician must demonstrate technical proficiency, strong problem-solving skills, and a thorough understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of vehicle systems and related equipment. They should be capable of working independently as well as collaborating effectively within a team. A solid understanding of the commercial operations of the workshop, dealership, garage, or branch is essential. Additionally, they must possess strong customer service skills and the ability to identify opportunities to improve work efficiency.

Course Summary:

As a Horticulture or Landscape Supervisor, you will specialise in one of these disciplines within organisations of various sizes which might include domestic gardens, public parks and gardens, green spaces, schools and tourist attractions.

Horticultural Supervisors are responsible for planning and managing the maintenance of established planted areas. They oversee and carry out both hard and soft landscape maintenance tasks, ensuring that each site is cared for in accordance with its design, intended purpose, and the organisation’s goals. Their advanced skill set allows them to perform a broad range of horticultural activities.

Landscaping Supervisors plan, supervise, and undertake the work required to construct new landscapes that meet client specifications. These projects can range from high-value, complex landscapes featuring ornamental elements and a mix of horizontal and vertical structures, to smaller domestic installations such as patios, retaining walls, water features, decking, or pergolas.

Both Horticulture and Landscaping Supervisors typically work outdoors throughout the year, in all weather conditions. Their tasks may also involve working at height, such as when pruning tall plants or hedges. They will also be responsible for leading and managing teams.

Course Summary:

This occupation is found in a wide range of outdoor spaces with horticultural spaces including:

  • Schools

  • Private gardens
  • Estates

In this role, an individual will perform practical tasks to create and maintain horticultural spaces, covering both the soft elements (such as plants and soil) and the hard elements (including surfaces, features, and structures). While some may manage the full spectrum of tasks, from landscape construction to maintenance, most will specialise in a particular area due to the broad range of skills needed.

Horticultural specialists maintain soft and hard elements of the space. This will include planting and maintenance activities.

Landscape Construction specialists will install landscapes including building hard surfaces, structures and features and planting.  This will include planting and maintenance activities. Horticulture or landscape construction operatives frequently work outdoors year-round and in all weathers. They sometimes work at heights for example pruning taller plants and hedges.

Horticulture or Landscape operatives will require qualifications and or training to undertake activities such as use of machinery.

In this role, an individual will be responsible for completing their tasks to the required standards with minimal supervision, ensuring deadlines are met. They must adhere to quality guidelines and comply with relevant legislation, as well as environmental, health, safety, and welfare regulations. They are accountable for their own health and safety, as well as that of others. Horticulture or Landscape operatives are also responsible for maintaining their tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure they are safe for use. They report to supervisors, team leaders, head gardeners, or clients.

The Livestock Unit Technician is responsible for the day-to-day operational management of livestock tasks on the farm, focusing on animal health and welfare from conception and birth through to delivery to the customer. Course Summary: 

Plastering is a core function within the construction sector, particularly the house building sector and refurbishment sectors.

The broad purpose of this occupation is to apply layers of plaster onto walls, floors and ceilings. Plastering serves a protective function, in that it makes buildings more robust and also an aesthetic function. Plasterers will often complete dry lining projects during their career. Although a person may specialise solely in dry lining, a plasterer must have the knowledge of dry lining in addition to their knowledge and skills to plaster.

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with commercial and domestic customers, other trades, architects and site managers. All plasterers can work on their own or as part of a small team. They work on small-scale domestic jobs, large repair and restoration projects and on big commercial developments such as schools or hospitals, therefore coming into contact with a wide range of people.

Whilst some plasterers are directly employed by companies specialising in plastering, there are a lot who are sub contracted by companies to work on new or existing buildings.

Course Summary:

Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. Plumbing and domestic heating technicians can find themselves working inside or outside a property. Customer service skills and being tidy and respectful are important qualities as they can often find themselves working in customers’ homes as well as on building sites.

As a competent Plumbing and Heating Technician, the installation of plumbing and heating systems includes:

  • Accurate measuring
  • Marking
  • Cutting
  • Bending and jointing metallic and non-metallic pipework

Appliances and equipment can include:

  • Gas
  • Oil and solid fuel boilers
  • Pumps
  • Heat emitters
  • Bathroom furniture
  • Controls as part of a cold water, hot water and central heating
  • Above ground drainage and rainwater systems.

The role will primarily be carried out in an outdoors environment and sites will range from general grass root sports surfaces, sports clubs, schools, up to international stadiums and training facilities.

The primary purpose of this role is to support the daily preparation, maintenance, and upkeep of grounds and sports pitches to the highest standards. This includes both public and private sports facilities used at all levels, from grassroots to professional sports, ensuring that the facilities meet government policies designed to promote physical activity.

Sports Turf Operatives are responsible for ensuring that all tasks are carried out in compliance with current health and safety legislation. They also manage the maintenance, renovation, and overall appearance of one or more sports turf surfaces, tailored to the specific needs of each sport. Their role involves maintaining a playing surface of appropriate quality, reflecting the surface’s capacity to ensure a sustainable and effective playing area.

  • Entry onto the Apprenticeship is subject to a thorough skills scan assessment to clarify course suitability
  • Entry onto the Apprenticeship is subject to 4 GCSEs including Maths and English 9-4/A-C or Functional Skills Level 2
  • Apprentices aged 16-18 years are subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and Maths Functional Skills at Level 2 where the Apprentice only holds the level 1 qualifications (GCSE grades D-G/3-1)
  • Following the updated DFE Apprenticeship rules, from 11th February 2025. Apprentices who begin their apprenticeship training when aged 19+ will no longer be subject to this mandatory requirement. It is now the decision of the apprentice and their employer at the start of their apprenticeship to choose to study towards a Maths and English qualification
  • A DBS check is also required

Progression:

As well as ensuring full competency as a Teaching Assistant, this standard provides a foundation for potential progression into a number of career paths in the Educational sector including Higher Level Teaching Assistant, Assistant Teacher and Teacher.

Course Summary:

Teaching Assistants work in Primary, Special and Secondary education across all age ranges encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities.

The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning either in groups or individually, ensuring pupils understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress. Promoting self-belief, social inclusion and a high self-esteem play an integral part to pupils’ well-being; ensuring pupils thrive in a positive, nurturing, safe environment.

It is an active role supporting the learner to access the curriculum. They are good role models, act with honesty and integrity, take part in team meetings; contribute to planning and class activities. Promoting Fundamental British Values through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and positive behaviours are crucial in contributing to improved pupil progress and development.

Typically based in a collision repair workshop, smart repair workshop, or mobile repair business, the technician collaborates with another fully qualified Paint Technician to complete the work efficiently.

Types of work undertaken include:

  • Surface preparation and painting to the manufacture paint specification
  • Using drying/curing techniques
  • Selecting the correct materials such as primers, base coats and lacquers

Progression:

On successful completion of the End Point Assessment and practical exams the Apprentice will qualify as a Veterinary Nurse at Level 3. Apprentices achieving this Apprenticeship standard will be eligible to apply for professional registration with the RCVS
